Rovio Entertainment is probably best known for the famous Angry Birds franchise which has taken the world by storm. Here is a brief history of this Finnish company.
In 2003 a company called Relude was formed in Espoo, Finland with the purpose of designing and developing mobile games. The business was the brainchild of three Finnish students, Niklas Hed, Jarno Väkeväinen, and Kim Dikert, who had met at the Helsinki University of Technology and had achieved success together at a mobile game development competition with their creation “King of the Cabbage World”.
Change Of Name in 2005
In 2005, the company received a boost from a business investor and changed its name to Rovio Mobile. 2007 to 2009 saw a decline in the company as it struggled due to some financial difficulties, however the Apple App Store offered the opportunity Rovio Mobile needed to get a foothold back into the marketplace.
Angry Birds: The Phenomenal That Changed Mobile App Landscape
The phenomenon known as Angry Birds began life with only a €25,000 development budget, however it was easy to see from the outset how addictive this game would be as the testers found that they regularly spent much longer than the allocated 15 minute periods playing the game.
After six months of development, the game was first released to the Finnish app store and then spread to Denmark, France, the Czech Republic and Sweden. After a meeting with Apple in 2011, the game was placed on the UK app store’s front page and given its own promotional YouTube video. Angry Birds was on its way to success.
Today, Angry Birds has been downloaded more than 75 million times and is the top paid app in more than 68 countries worldwide. There are now countless chart topping games attributed to Rovio including many incarnations of the original Angry Birds game including Star Wars and Transformers versions.
