About FinnFest - an ethnic festival like no other in the USA
FinnFest is a festival and conference celebrating Finnish-American and Finnish culture and heritage. It is an annual festival that brings modern Finland together with historic and contemporary America. Its mission, magnitude, and multitude of the program make it a unique event in the USA.
FinnFest 2011 is organized by FinnFest 2011 Inc., a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation established for this one-time purpose only by a dozen of private persons respecting the heritage of the Finnish-American past and interested in developing and promoting Finnish-American relations now and in the future.
FinnFest 2011 works in cooperation with FinnFest USA, which is a nationally based 501 (c) (3) corporation. The mission of FinnFest USA is to create "a broader community of Finnish-Americans, Finnish citizens living in America, and other Americans". The Board of FinnFest USA selects the site of each FinnFest about three years before the very event, negotiates with local American-Finnish organizations and individuals, and gives the guidelines and other support in incorporating and operating the festival as needed. The local organization then works with city officials, arts organizations, colleges and universities, and civic groups; the festival events often join on-going summer community festivals and become part of local theatrical, music, art, literature, and academic activities.
The Board of FinnFest USA operates independently from any political or religious groups, as does the FinnFest 2011 Inc.
